About Working Out Loud

Working Out Loud is a way to build relationships that can help you in some way, like achieving a goal, developing a skill, or exploring a new topic. Instead of networking to get something, you invest in relationships by making contributions over time, including your work and experiences that you make visible.

The results? When you Work Out Loud, your contributions over time build trust and deepen a sense of relatedness, increasing the chances for cooperation and collaboration. You're more effective because you have access to more people, knowledge, and opportunities that can help you. You feel better too, because your bigger network of meaningful relationships give you a greater sense of control, competence, and connection.

All of that leads to more motivation for individuals, and to more agility, innovation, and collaboration for an organization.

Working Out Loud Circles help you experience this for yourself. Circles are small peer support groups in which you build relationships related to a goal, using simple structured guides over 12 weeks. Over that time, you develop habits & a mindset you can apply to any goal. WOL Circles are now in over 50 countries and a wide range of organizations.

About me

I help organizations create more collaborative cultures – and help individuals access a better career and life – by spreading the practice of Working Out Loud. That includes events and workshops to launch WOL in your company;  integrating WOL into your on-boarding, talent development, and innovation programs; and helping you scale your own WOL movement across divisions and locations. I spent three decades working in big companies, and saw how the majority of people were disengaged if not downright unhappy. Although we talked about collaboration and culture, we were aggressively competing with each other. It was dehumanizing - a tragic waste of human and corporate potential - and I knew there had to be a better way.

So I worked on that way, and ultimately developed Working Out Loud, a practice that helps people be more effective, access more opportunities, and feel happier at work. Over several years, a small movement formed, based on a self-published book, a TEDx talk, and a peer support method that’s spread to over 40 countries and companies like Bosch, Daimler, BMW, and Siemens. And it feels like just the beginning.

When we tap into our innate needs for control, competence, and connection, it gives us a feeling of empowerment, of self-efficacy, that can change our lives. My aspiration is to help millions of people have that feeling. For now, I’m doing it by helping people in organizations craft their jobs into something more meaningful by building relationships that matter. In the longer-term, I want to expand the movement to include people who normally struggle to access opportunities - members of disadvantaged groups, students, the economically displaced. Instead of forcing them to wait for the system to give them equal access, I want to enable them to earn that access for themselves.
